Introduction

Since the publication by Worms and Company of its former booklet, the organisation of the firm has undergone certain functional changes, changes which were essential in order to keep pace with up-to-date developments in the field of their activities.
At the end of the Second World War, Worms and Company — whose origin it might be recalled, goes back to 1848, were operating in four spheres:
Banking;
Fuel merchanting;
Shipbuilding;
Shipowning and shipping agency work.
In 1945, the "Societe Anonyme des Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine maritime" (ACSM) was established, taking over the operation of the shipbuilding yard founded by Messrs Worms and Company in 1917 at Le Trait — just west of Rouen in the department Seine-Maritime. This yard is completely equipped to build vessels of any specification up to 24,000 tons deadweight.
The traditional activities of the House—shipping and fuel merchanting, were placed under one entity in 1957 by the creation of Worms, Compagnie Maritime et Charbonniere (Worms, CMC).
It is under its old established and world renowned title of Worms and Company—of which the two companies just mentioned are wholly owned subsidiaries, that the House carries on its activities as bankers. The continuous expansion of this business over the last fifteen years has enabled Worms and Company to occupy one of the most prominent positions among the private banks of France. It operates branches in Lyons, Marseilles, Algiers and Casablanca.
The functions and associations of Worms, Compagnie Maritime et Charbonniere are described below in more detail.
There are two General Managements in the Company, each having charge respectively of the services of fuel merchanting and shipping.
The General Management of the fuel merchanting service is engaged in the sale of imported and French coal, domestic and industrial fuels as well as combustible gases such as butane and propane. It functions through the channel of its branches and affiliated companies, all of which are essentially on French Territory.
The operations of the Company's own fleet is the responsibility of the General Management of the Shipping Services, as is also the running of its business of shipping agents, stevedoring, clearing and forwarding, and travel agents. Control is exercised through a whole network of branches, subsidiaries or agents in all ports of France, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt, and in numerous ports in other countries.
Particular care has been given to the development of its organisation in the following areas:
Great Britain. Worms and Co. Ltd. has its Head Office in London with branch organisations at Cardiff, Swansea, Grimsby, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. For more than a century close collaboration has been maintained with the firm of James Burness and Sons Ltd, and through its subsidiary James Burness and Sons (D.C. and 0.) Ltd., it represents the interests of Worms in the latter's business with British and American Owners.
Egypt. Semco maintains on the Suez Canal the traditional position of the firm which has been predominant since the opening of the Canal in 1869.
Oil pipeline terminals. In Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon and Syria, the long experience of the Company in tanker agency business is always available, especially where new installations shoiv the need for new services.
U.S.A. Worms, C.M.C. has appointed Eric Boulton, Inc., of 11 Broadway, New York, 4, as its official correspondents.
It is worth while mentioning that Worms Compagnie Maritime et Charbonniere is very closely linked with the Nouvelle Compagnie Havraise Peninsulaire de Navigation (NCHP) which operates regular liner services between Europe and the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius.
Equally Worms, CMC has close bonds with the Societe Francaise de Transports Petroliers (SFTP).
The Compagnie Nantaise des Chargeurs de l’Ouest is another which is linked to Worms, CMC and whose dry cargo fleet is engaged in both regular liner and tramping business.
Worms CMC is assuredly therefore in a position to render any service or provide any facility to vessels entrusted to the care of its branches, affiliates or agents in Europe, the Mediterranean, or overseas.
It is hoped that you will find in this booklet useful references to assist you in furthering your interests, and particularly as far as shipping matters are concerned, you will avail yourself of the long experience this company has to offer.

Introduction

Depuis la publication de sa précédente brochure, Worms et Cie a entrepris certains changements essentiels dans son fonctionnement, de façon à suivre tous les aspects de l'évolution survenant dans le domaine de ses activités.
A la fin de la 2^ème Guerre mondiale, Worms et Cie, dont les origines, rappelons-le, remontent à 1848, avait 4 secteurs d'activités :
Banque
Commerce des combustibles
Construction navale
Affrètement et transport maritime
En 1945, la société anonyme des Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine maritime, ACSM, fut créée, pour reprendre en charge la construction navale (créée par MM. Worms et Cie en 1917, au Trait, à l'ouest de Rouen, dans le département de la Seine maritime). Ce chantier est parfaitement équipé pour construire des navires de tout tonnage jusqu'à 24.000 TdW.
Les activités traditionnelles de la société, commerce et transport de combustibles, ont été confiées à une société créée à cette fin (19957), Worms Cie maritime et charbonnière (Worms CMC).
C'est sous le nom ancien et de renommée mondiale de Worms et Cie, dont ces 2 sociétés sont des filiales à part entière, que le groupe exerce ses activités bancaires - l'expansion continuelle de cette activité au cours des 15 dernières années a permis à Worms et Cie d'occuper une des positions les plus importantes parmi les banques privées de France. Worms et Cie a des filiales à Lyon, Marseille, Alger et Casablanca.
Il y a deux départements à l'intérieur de la société.
Les activités de Worms et Cie maritime et charbonnière sont décrites ci-dessous plus en détail :
L'un chargé du commerce des combustibles l'autre chargé du transport.
La direction générale du département du commerce des combustibles s'occupe de la vente du charbon français, et d'importation des combustibles tels que le butane ou le propane. Il fonctionne par l'intermédiaire de ses succursales et filiales situées pour la plupart sur le territoire français.
La direction générale des Services maritimes est chargée du fonctionnement de la flotte de la compagnie, ainsi que des activités d'agents maritimes, du chargement et déchargement, du dédouanement, de l'expédition et agences de voyage. Le contrôle se fait par un réseau d'agences, succursales et filiales dans tous les ports de France, Algérie, Tunisie, Égypte et de nombreux ports situés dans d'autres pays.
On porte une attention particulière au développement de son organisation dans les secteurs suivants :
Grande-Bretagne : Worms et Cie Ltd a son siège à Londres, des succursales à Cardiff, Swansea, Grimsby et Newcastle/Tyne. Depuis plus d'un siècle, elle travaille en collaboration étroite avec la firme de James Burness et fils, et par l'intermédiaire de James Burness (& Sons) & fils (DCO), représente les intérêts de Worms dans ses activités de transport de marchandises, auprès des armateurs américains et anglais.
Égypte : Semco occupe toujours sur le canal de Suez, la place prépondérante de l'entreprise qui a été prédominante depuis l'ouverture du canal en 1869.
Terminaux de Pipe-line :
En Algérie, Tunisie, Liban et Syrie, la longue expérience de la Compagnie dans le transport par pétrolier a toujours cours, particulièrement là où de nouvelles installations entraînent l'implantation de nouveaux services.
USA - Worms CMC a nommé Eric Boulton Inc., of 11 Broadway, New York, 4, comme correspondant officiel.
Cela vaut la peine de mentionner que Worms Cie maritime & charbonnière est en étroite relation avec la Nouvelle Compagnie havraise péninsulaire de navigation, (NCHP) qui assure des services réguliers de paquebots entre l'Europe et la Mer Rouge, le Golfe Persique, Madagascar, la Réunion et Maurice.
De même, Worms CMC est en relation avec la Société française des transports pétroliers.
La Compagnie nantaise des chargeurs de l'Ouest, une autre société, est liée à Worms CMC, et s'occupe de transport de cargaisons sèches sur lignes régulières et en tramping.
Worms CMC est parfaitement en mesure de fournir n'importe quel service et équipement aux navires qui sont confiés à ses filiales en Europe, Méditerranée, ou sur les autres continents.

Shipyard Le Trait (Seine-Maritime)

The Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine-Maritime were inaugurated at Le Trait (in the department Seine-Maritime) in 1917 by Worms and Company. They were converted into a Société Anonyme in July 1945.
During the second world war, the Yards suffered extensive damage. Reconstruction work provided an opportunity to install new equipment to keep pace with modem techniques in shipbuilding, as a resuit of which the Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine-Maritime now have one of the best equipped yards in France.
Situated on the right hank of the River Seine about 90 miles from Paris, between Rouen and Le Havre, the Yard is some 65 acres in extent of which 60,000 square yards are under cover. It comprises departments working at: steel plate welding, marine boiler and engine construction, pipe and tube assembly, heavy forging, joinery (with sawmill), and running of electric, hydraulic and pneumatic power stations. It is fully equipped for electric-arc, hand and automatic machine welding, and for pre-fabricated construction.
There are eight slipways, one of which is under cover, all equipped with powerful cranes, which enable the building of vessels up to 24,000 tons deadweight to be undertaken.
A fitting out basin, 690 feet long, is capable of receiving vessels drawing up to 23 feet - irrespective of tide.
The following show the types of vessels which the Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine-Maritime have already constructed:
- For the French Admiralty: torpedo-boats, mine sweepers, boom-defence vessels, supply tankers, submarines, etc.
- For Merchant Navies: trawlers, cargo and mixed cargo vessels, tankers, ore-carriers, colliers, etc.
In addition, the Yard constructs the following:
- Marine boilers of all types ;
- Uniflux steam engines with poppet valves made under licence from Skinner;
- Free piston generators and gas turbines made under licence from Sigma.
Finally, Ateliers et Chantiers de la Seine-Maritime hold the licence of the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company for the construction of Horton hydrocarbonate tanks, spheroids, vaporspheres, vapor- domes, vaportanks and water towers and Conkey filters.
